How to Restore an Old Wooden Chair

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to upgrade your dining room, refurbish an antique family chair, or spruce up a thrift store find, you’re in luck. A properly refurbished rocking chair can make a great conversation piece for any modern apartment or home. Restoring wooden chairs may take a bit of work and elbow grease, but minimal tools or expertise are needed. If you want to make that chair last or upsell your work, we’ve got the tips you need to get it done.

wooden chair1. Gather your supplies. Preparation is the key to any successful project, and DIY      furniture restoral is no different.

You’ll need:

  • Paint
  • Primer
  • Putty or Wood Filler
  • 180-220 Grit Sandpaper
  • Degreaser
  • Stain and Staining Sponge
  • Stripper

2. Mix a few tablespoons of a degreaser (even dish liquid works) with warm water. Use a    barely damp cloth to wipe down the chair and remove any dirt or grime. Dry the chair  thoroughly.

3. If there are any deep scratches, fill them with your putty or wood filler. Sand any small  blemishes to smooth out the chair. Remove any old glue, paint, or varnish if you plan on repainting. Give the putty 24 hours to dry.

4. Apply a primer and let it dry thoroughly. Next, apply a stripper to all areas that will be refurbished. Give it time to complete its work (if you haven’t noticed, this process takes a lot of time and patience).

5. With a plastic scraper, remove any old finish. Repeat the process with another coat of stripper if necessary.

6. Use 180-220 grit sandpaper to smooth out any blemishes and imperfections and create a surface for the stain.

7. Using a staining sponge or brush, apply the stain lightly and evenly. Make sure that the  stain dries completely. If you have an upscale apartment with a wooden floor, make sure  the stain complements it.

8. Once the stain is dry, you can finish off the project with another sanding for a fine finish.  Wipe down the dust, and if needed, apply a second layer. Once dried, sit back and enjoy  the fruits of your labor.
