Winter Bedroom Decorating to Stave Off Seasonal Blues

Up to 20 percent of the population experiences some form of winter or seasonal blues, reports the Cleveland Clinic. And up to 6 percent of the population suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or seasonal depression.

Filling your bedroom environment with stimulating décor can keep your energy levels up during this sometimes dark and dreary time of the year.

Of course, if you are experiencing intense seasonal depression, it’s best to seek medical advice. For those who feel occasional lethargy or sadness during the winter, changing your bedroom décor might help.

Light Fixtures

Really the best way to combat the winter blues is to expose yourself to as much light as possible. The lack of sunlight can cause physiological effects on the body.

Artificial sunlight lamps and machines are available in a range of prices. They can sit on your bedside table and gradually wake you up in the morning. The Cleveland Clinic advises to use light therapy in the mornings rather than in the evenings, so to avoid insomnia.

Many of these artificial sunlight devices are beautifully designed and can add an attractive accent piece to your bedside table. You can even purchase artificial sunlight bulbs and replace your current light bulbs for the winter months. Artificial sunlight lamps come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and styles, so you can match your current bedroom style.

Bedding

With decreased daylight usually comes increased sleep. This is a good chance to restore during the cold months, but if you sleep too much, you may intensify your winter blues. It’s important to get a restful sleep each night. Comfortable and therapeutic bedding and pillows are good choices.

Most people switch to cotton, flannel, or fleece sheets during the winter to keep warm. To maintain a chic and luxurious look to your bedding, try using silk pillowcases paired with warmer sheet sets. Silk is a soft, soothing texture, but may be too cold on your entire body in the winter.

Most people complain about their pillows being too warm, so choose a fabric like silk for your pillow cases to keep your pillow nice and cool while you sleep.

Restful sleep will give you energy to tackle your daily tasks rather than tempting you to stay in bed all day. And by having a beautiful fabric like silk on your bed, your bedding will be attractive and chic. It may even encourage more than just sleeping with your significant other, which goes a long way to improve mood.

Decluttering

Losing focus is another ailment people suffer from when they have seasonal blues. If your bedroom is cluttered with clothing, dishes, and miscellaneous objects, it’ll be near impossible for you to sleep well and focus. Plus, a cluttered bedroom is not exactly one you want to show off if you have guests visiting for the holidays.

Use storage solutions like closet shelves, under the bed containers, and wicker baskets to hide the junk that’s been clogging your bedroom and your brain. You’ll sleep better and possibly shake some of those winter blues.

Making winter bedroom decorating a project can also help with any seasonal depression that crops up, as it’ll keep you busy. There’s no reason to feel down again this winter. A beautiful bedroom may just help you enjoy winter this year.
