The Reason Why Amish Furniture Is Also Called Heirloom Furniture

Amish furniture is famous for its durability and longevity. It is also famous for having the kind of classic design styles that never go out of fashion.

It is quite literally the kind of furniture that can be handed down from generation to generation and the reasons for this are many:

  • The raw materials used for making the furniture are usually solid wood sourced from hard wood trees. Generally speaking, there is no ply or particle board used. So since the furniture is made using solid wood it is more durable.
  • The Amish modes of furniture making have some pretty well known traditions of joinery. There are no nails and bolts used, rather mortise and tenon joints are used. It is the famous dovetail joinery that offers a smooth and seamless appearance to the furniture.
  • The fact that little or no mechanization is used to make the furniture means that it is made largely by hand; some craftsmen still preferring the use of hand tools. Since furniture making is one of the main sources of income for many in the Amish community some mechanization is allowed. However, most of the finishing is still done by hand, with care and attention given to the details.

Since Amish furniture is long lasting furniture and the classic styles mean that it never really goes out of style, many see it as a great investment for the house.
