Going About Your Own Home Interior Design

For many, the idea of home interior design can seem quite intimidating, although it’s really not. Designing one’s home can actually be very fun, as creativity is a major part of the process.

However, careful planning should be done to ensure that each space in your home is functional and sets the right mood for its use and purpose.

When it comes to home interior design, most people know what they want but are unsure of how to achieve it. This is where the basic elements of interior design come into play.

There are five tenets of home interior design to help you come up with a plan for everything else to fall into place.

5 Elements of home interior design

  1. Proportion and scale entails the space and size of everything in a room, including the people in it. It also involves the relationship of objects in a room, such as the size of a window in relation to the rest of the room.
  2. Balance in home interior design speaks all about symmetry. Balance in a room can also be asymmetrical, such as furniture and objects that are not in same size; create a balance and complement each other when placed together.
  3. Rhythm in home interior design involves creating a consistent feel or texture throughout by use of repetition. This can be achieved by the use of a certain theme or motif throughout the décor.
  4. Contrast can create interesting aspects in each room for home interior design. Although décor should be consistent in style, you can add contrast by varying the size and color.
  5. Harmony will be achieved once all these rules have been followed.

At the start of any home interior design project, the number one thing to do is to get organized.

Whether you are doing it alone or working with an interior decorator, it will help you to know how things are going and what is being done if you put a foot into the project, help with measurements, and know how or why things are being done.

Here are some tips to help you get organized in the beginning of your exciting journey into home interior design:

  1. Make sure you have a big sturdy bag you can bring along when shopping for samples and swatches, taking measurements, for keeping a copy of your floor plan, keeping receipts and other important documents. You will also want to include measuring tape, pencils, and a notepad.
  2. Keeping some file folders would be a useful way of keeping track of all your documents and expenses for home interior design. Keep them at home but bring essential photocopied documents when you are out, such as the floor plan, which you will need to consider when shopping for furniture, appliances, and many more.
  3. Ask somebody to go with you when shopping for supplies. You will need a second opinion and an extra hand to help you carry all your stuffs. Further, you will need somebody to remind you of the things you need in case you forgot.
