The Ottoman – A Smart Storage Space Under a Comfy Seat

The ottoman has been used for long periods of time and then best thing about it is that it can actually be transformed into a versatile piece of furniture. For instance you can use it as an extra seating or to prop your legs. One of the most modern uses is to have an ottoman for extra storage.

A Smart Storage Space Under a Comfy Seat

Start with the case

You will need ¾ inch plywood for the base, bottom and top. Clamp and glue the four sides together. After this you will have to drill holes to secure the pieces together with the help of screws. Cut some pine cleats and install them in the base of the interior. Each corner should have reinforcing pine blocks. The bottom piece should be secured to the cleats.

Upholstering the base

Cut the upholstery and the batting for the base. Apply a layer of fast drying glue to the back of the upholstery and stick the batting to it. Then apply glue to the batting and starting at one of the corners secure it to the base of the ottoman. At the seam the fabric should overlap.

Upholstering the lid

You will need some high density foam. Apply some glue to the plywood except for the perimeter. Then add some adhesive to the edges of the foam and fold down the edges so that they will meet the plywood. Wrap the foam in the upholstery and staple the fabric to the underside of the lid. Line the top with piping and secure it in place with staples.

Add the lid and the feet

The top should be secured to the base by a hinge and also a toy box lid support. Add the feet to the bottom. These could be stained or painted according to your preferences and also have the style of the ottoman and the room’s style in mind.

Finishing touches

All there is left for you to do is to add the items that you need to store inside the ottoman and to place it wherever you want it to be. This kind of storage is just perfect for the homes that have only little space and for the people who are looking for smart storage options. Your guests will never know that they are sitting on a storage bin when they sit on your ottoman. The only clue might be that the ottoman is heavier than the other regular ottomans.
