3 Ways to Upcycle an Old Pair of Ladders

Nobody likes throwing away their old things. So, interior designers have made it their mission to discover innovative ways to recycle old home goods, turning them from disused and dusty junk into vibrant, bespoke pieces of furniture and home decorations.

This trend is called upcycling, and it’s taken the interior design and home décor world by storm. One item that is commonly upcycled is a pair of ladders. If you have an old pair of ladders and are thinking of throwing them out, don’t. There are lots of ways to use them to bring a bit of unique style to your home.  Here are just 3 ways to upcycle them.

Horizontal Display

If you take a pair of old wooden ladders and turn them of their side, they make for an excellent wall display to hold books, ornaments or other decorations.  First, take the ladders and sand them down to remove rot of splinters.  Then, take a wood paint and paint them the accent colour of the room they’ll feature in.

Finish off with a clear gloss to prevent damage and drill into your walls. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous and have an empty corner of a room, why not cut the ladders in half and connect them back together on a right angle instead.

Cut Up Frames

A second great upcycle ladder idea would be to cut just above every second rung on the ladder to create square ladder frames. These could be used for all sorts of purposes, but of our favourite is to use them as cool photo frames which could be painted in different tones to add splashes of colour around a room.

If you’re looking to decorate a hallway with family photos, for example, you could put everybody’s portrait in a separate frame, and paint them in your room’s accent colour, progressing from a light variety to a dark one.

Garden Benches

Upcycling doesn’t need to be kept to the interior.  They can also be used outside for a number of fun purposes. As an example, setting up step ladders like the ones available from Globeladders creates a nice seat for a wary gardener.  You could even use the top rungs for housing potted plants and other decorations like delightful little garden gnomes.

So as you can see, there are plenty of ways to bring a little bit of personality to your property by upcycling.  Ladders are only one example of an upcycleable item, so make sure you check out the Pinterest boards for some extra inspiration.
