Although the ice dams may look pretty during the winter, you should also consider that they also represent danger to certain parts of the house. This is because they could make the water pour back in the house, peeling the paint down, sagging and staining ceilings, and so on.

How do they form?

In order to be able to prevent them, first you should know how these dams come to life. At the beginning the heat from the attic warms the roof but not the eaves. Because of the warmth the snow melts on the rooftop, but it freezes again at the eaves which are cold.

This is how the ice is formed at the eaves. There is more water coming from the melting snow, building up. The water could get under the shingles and go right back in your home.

How to Get Rid of them?

There are many options to get rid of them like:

1. Heated cables

One of the options you have in order to take care of the problem is to use heated cables. You should secure them to the edge of the roof in order to equalize the temperature inside and outside the roof. In case you would like to use this method, you should make sure to install the cables before the cold weather hits.

2. Fire with fire

Actually in this case you should fight cold with cold. All you have to do is to bring a box fan into the attic and place it where the water is leaking into your home. Because of the cold, the water will freeze, and so you can take care of the problem in a few minutes.

Remember that removing the dams with a chisel, hammer or shovel damages your rooftop. If you use salt, you do more harm than good because it damages the soil. So look for a safer solution.

3. Raking

This is an easy solution to make sure that you won’t have to face ice dams. Rake the snow off your rooftop while standing on the ground. Opt for a rake with wheels. This way you can instantly change the temperature of the roof without harming the shingles.

4. Deicing

You could decrease the damages done by the ice dams using pantyhose. Just fill the pantyhose that you don’t need anymore with ice melter. Place it on the roof in the middle of the dam so that it touches the gutter. You could use a garden rake to place the pantyhose in the right position.

Most people think about doing some DIY home improvement to give them something to do in their spare time but you have to realize that these kinds of projects usually take a lot of hard work. You get a lot of satisfaction at the end of the project when you see everything you’ve accomplished and how hard you worked, but the actually job of getting it done can take a good amount of time.

Sometimes a little home improvement cannot be ignored because your house is becoming to fall apart from the inside.

You have to keep your eyes and ears open when you are doing some DIY home improvement because you can get some good tips from the places you’d least expect. Plenty of people have dealt with doing their own home improvements in the past, so these are the people you will want to talk to when you need some help.

Most people will be willing to help a newcomer to the world of home improvement because they know all about the hard work that is involved with the entire process.

The first step in the home improvement process is always to plan everything out and see what you can afford to do with your home. The good thing is that most projects that you do on your own are going to be much cheaper than having someone else come out and do it.

You can expect to see an increase in the value of your home without have to spend that much money because you are willing to do all of the big time work on your own.

Where can you learn about DIY improvement?

The best place to look for help with your trials in the world of DIY home improvement is the Internet because that is where the hub of all the information you will need is going to be found. There are probably thousands, if not millions, of people who have already done the things you want to do to your home, so you should try to learn from these people as you go. There are plenty of forums online where you can learn the tricks of the trade and find out some special tips on how to lighten up your workload.

The best tip that someone is going to be able to give you is to make sure you plan everything out ahead of time so you don’t have to keep starting all over again. Most people want to just dive right into a project and not worry about the exact end product because they just want to get started on the work. While the work ethic is great for people who get started too early, they will find themselves doing a lot more work than they needed to if they don’t plan everything out in advance.

Take it one step at a time

The best way to get your DIY home improvement project done is to take it one step at a time and try to learn as much as you can as you go. There are plenty of tutorial videos about pretty much any kind of improvement you can make on your home available online, so just take the time to learn from these and work slowly.

In these difficult economic times, more and more young people are relying on their families to help them find their feet. Moving back in with a parent can be great – not only does it save money, but also you’re living with someone who knows how to work the washing machine. However, it can also lead to arguments, personality clashes and misunderstandings.

So if your son or daughter is thinking of moving back home, think carefully about the best way to help them and be prepared for a few rocky moments: they’re all grown up now with a will of their own. Below are 3 things to consider:

1. Do the math

Extra people under your roof doesn’t just mean you’ll be paying out more for water, heating and gas – everything from your weekly grocery shop to your home insurance is going to be affected. Draw up a budget which includes every monthly outgoing and work out how your finances are going to fit together – would it be cheaper for you to make a contribution to their rent in another house?

2. Work out the rent

In most scenarios, your son or daughter should be paying you a monthly sum: it will not only help you out with the costs mentioned above, it has the equally important function of giving them a sense of their own independence. They’ll feel less like a child that’s relying on their parents and more like an adult who’s capable of contributing financially to a household – an important distinction for someone who’s hoping to move on and out when they’ve got enough saved.

There are, of course, exceptional circumstances: maybe your child has no way of earning money or is only staying with you sporadically while looking for a new home. It should nonetheless be made clear from the off that as soon as they stay with you for longer than a month and have access to funds, they’ll have to start paying their way. It’s actually more encouraging than giving them indefinite gratis lodging. You’re saying that yes, their circumstances are difficult at the moment, but you have faith that they will find a way to cope and will be able to support themselves soon.

3. Giving each other space

You’re not used to having your child at home and they’re used to living alone or with friends – it’s a big adjustment for both of you. Many children moving home from living independently have become used to determining their own schedules and being restricted again to their parents’ habits can be frustrating. For parents, it’s like having grouchy teenagers again – hungry for independence and resentful of ‘meddling’ well-meaning questions.

The thing to remember is that you’re all adults. You have every right to set ground rules but you can’t treat your son or daughter like a child any more – understand that they’ve grown as people and that’s a positive thing. Have conversations and be prepared to make compromises.

You might be one of those people who like to handle things themselves DIY style; and so you may be interested in tube insulation that you can do on your own. The best course of action is to buy especially created foam tubes that are easy to install. In case the pipes are exposed, installing the insulation is very simple, but things get more complicated in case they are embedded in walls.

There are some aspects that you will have to pay attention to. When you are buying the foam, you should choose those sizes that allow you to have to throw away the least amount of foam. It is also very important to match the diameter of the pipes with the diameter of the foam.

The capacity of the insulation foam is measured in R values, and this varies between 2 and 4. The higher the value is, the better the insulation is, but the price also rises according to the R value.

Usually there is a slit made along the length of the foam that is created by the manufacturer. If this is not the case then you will have to use a utility knife to create it.

Those foam tubes that come with a slit also have an adhesive strip. If there is no slit then you will have to seal the foam with the help of duct tape. This has to be done once the foam is installed.

It is very likely that you will have to add insulation to segments that have a 90 degree elbow. In such a case you need to cut two segments, both of them ending in a part of 45 degree, and join the two segments with the help of a miter connection.

When it comes to insulation, there are different kinds of pipe insulation to choose from, and the most basic ones include foam with or without self-adhesive tape, fiberglass shell tubing, fiberglass wrap, and regular fiberglass insulation.

A special kind of tape is the heating tape. This is made of plastic with a wire inside it, and in the majority of the cases it is used in locations where the temperatures drop below zero degrees. The tape will heat the pipes so that they will remain ice-free.

Most probably you won’t need heating tape in case of a regular home. Usually people go for the foam to insulate pipes.

If you stay in an area with plentiful sunshine, it is a shame not to incorporate solar power into your daily life in some form or fashion. Heating and cooling solutions, electrification of the home at least in part, can be quite effectively accomplished by using solar power.

Stories about homeowners going solar and making a considerable saving are now a rising trend. Many experts have opined that solar energy is the way forward, not only because it is non-polluting and environment friendly, but because it is cheap (after the initial purchase and installment of the panels) and is virtually inexhaustible (as against depleting reserves of fossil fuels).

Solar power not only makes sense because of energy savings today, but also adds to the resale value of your home, so that at least some of that investment can be recovered at a later date.

Solar power is catching on in a big way, as evidenced by stories such as the one about the Hawaiian island of Oahu –

a community consisting of 2000 military families will now be powered by solar energy and is slated to become one of the largest solar powered communities in the United States.

Currently under construction, the facility will provide four megawatts of electricity a year and will help offset an estimated 260 million pounds of carbon dioxide.

If you want to go solar, consider the following –

Sun Exposure

Your living in a sunny locale which has relatively constant sunshine the year round does make more sense if you want to rely on solar energy. Also the positioning of your home matters – if the home comes under the shadow of another taller building, tree or other construction nearby, solar panels may not make sense.

A home with a south facing roof is the best bet.

Consider your home

Solar panels can be a considerably outlay and to recover that outlay in terms of energy savings can take time. So if you own your home, the investment into solar makes sense, for those who live in leased homes, it can make sense only if the landlord is willing to at least chip in.

Also an old home may not be strong enough to support the panels and there could be a need to upgrade the roof.

What is your budget?

A Solar water heater will cost less while a installing solar panels will cost a lot more. So shop around for the best deals, and see if there are any service providers who lease out solar panels.

Also to claim state and federal tax credits, your income needs to be above a certain amount, so before purchasing solar panels consider all your options and weigh all of them with an eye to the rebates that you may or may not get.

Finally contact a service provider with a proven track record and long term experience. Take your time to consider all your options and obtain realistic estimates from the service provider.

It might have happened to you that you have been talking about a house and you find yourself looking for your words, not knowing what the name of certain parts of the house is. This may be a bit weird, especially in case you are talking to someone who really knows his self around houses.

Enfilade

Do you have any idea what that is? Well, it is a series of doors placed in a row, without any interruptions. Such elements are quite common in case of larger homes.

Haunch

Do you have a haunch? You may have, but it is possible that you don’t even know about it. In case you have an arch, most probably it has a curving part bookened by the peak and it could be a molding or capital abutment.

Inglenook

It is possible that you have never heard about such a thing, and the truth is that quite few homes have it. It is nook found besides a fireplace that in the majority of the cases it used for seating.

Kite winder

In case of steps to make economy of space, they might make a 90 degree turn. If you have three wedge shaped stairs that make such a turn, that are also known as winders, then you can say that you have a kite winder in your home.

Scuncheon

This one is quite easy. If there is a portion of wall between the inner face of a window jamb or door and between the wall, it is the scuncheon. This appears because the windows are thinner than the wall itself.

Bargeboard

Gable roofs usually have bargeboards, because it is a board that has been attached to the roof for decorative reasons. These can usually be found in case of Tudor or Gothic Revival styles. Most of the times they come with carvings and details painted quite colorfully. They are also known as gabeboard or vergeboard.

Check throat

In many cases the windowsill has a cut in its underside, to make sure that the water won’t reach the wall. This cut is known as the check throat.

Clestory

Usually high walls have such items, because the clestory is a series of windows in case of these walls.

Cricket

This is a part of the roof that is pointy in order to divert the falling rainwater in case of the chimney and it is part of the main roof.

One of the most popular topics in our days is ‘going green’. This is something that affects not only the adult generation, but seniors and children as well.

When people talk about ‘green’ homes, they usually refer to energy, but there are also some other aspects of life that can be turned green, and such examples are hybrid cars, wind energy, reusable bags, eco-friendly clothing, and recycled home décor. All these represent a part of the defense line for the safety of Earth.

Mankind has come up with alternative options for fuel, and in our days people are talking more and more about saving energy.

There are two major types of plans for solar houses. One of them is the ‘Passive Solar Plan’. This refers to trapping the solar energy and using it as part of the design of the house.

This kind of plan could be effective or not, based on where the house is located; the climate could be cooler, such as in the case of the Northeast, or the climate could be warmer, like in the case of Southwest.

In case you are thinking about opting for this plan, you will have to count the windows that are facing south. Cover all of these windows with solar window shades. This way you will be able to keep the house cool during the summer.

The second type of solar energy plan is the ‘Active Solar Plan’. This kind of plan takes the use of solar energy a little further. Just as in the previous case, people are trapping the energy of sun, but in this case, energy is trapped and distributed in the entire home.

In the majority of the cases you will need to purchase solar-energy equipment. This way you will be able to transform the solar energy into energy that you can use to operate several different appliances. The most common types of equipment include solar panels and water heaters.

According to the professionals, the best way to make your home energy efficient is to mix the two kinds of plans. It doesn’t really matter whether you go for the passive or the active plan, or for their combination, you will still need solar roof panels.

There are some ways to achieve weather protection and to efficiently generate solar energy, such as the photovoltaic shingles. The length of the majority of the PV shingles varies between 1 foot and 85 inches. These shingles are placed one by one over the entire roof.

It is also possible to alter the size of the shingles in order for them to be suitable for the specific needs of your home. If you are seeking the best results possible, you should get the PV shingles installed by hiring a roofer.

As you can see, it is not that difficult to turn your home into a green one and shape up its exterior look at the same time.

Renovating or upgrading your home need not be an expensive project. Small inexpensive changes and additions can go a long way to give your home a new and fresh look. One of the easiest ways to save money while contemplating renovations is to look for easy to do DIY projects.

Wall paints and floor paints are one of the easiest ways to give a room or a home a completely new look. Get yourself a can of wall paint and bring life to a drab room. All you need is a weekend to transform a home. Use of bold lush colors can help bring in life.

Floor paints too can uplift a room. They can be used on most surfaces and you can paint the floor in a pattern or go wild with colors to bring more vitality to the room.

Add elegance to any room with the help of crown moldings. They are now available in easy to install styles that help you add plenty of charm to a room or an entire home. The new generation of crown moldings is made of polystyrene and can be easily cut with a hand saw.

Easy to fit and beautiful, the crown molding will lift your home’s spirit on a low budget of money and time.

Slippery stairs can be easily taken care of with ready made runner carpets that are easy to install and fairly easy on the pocket too. They can also help spruce up old looking stairs without having to spend thousands in getting new runners.

Look for bargains at the flea market. Think creatively to convert old items into vintage beauties. You could use old lanterns or unique glass bottles as a lamp shade or hanging lamp. Let the imagination go wild and use things they were never supposed to be.

An old metal fence can be spruced up and hung upside down to provide a row of hooks. The idea is to think out of the box to bring unique décor to your homes.

Look for seconds sales or fire sales that offer merchandise with flaws. In most cases the flaw can be as minor as a botched batch of dye. It will help you save lot of money and your friends and family will be none the wiser.

Choose appliances that help you save on energy and water in the long run. It could be an efficient dish washer, a programmable thermostat or an insulating cork floor, a water filter or even ceiling fans to cope with heat. They may look like expenditure but will pay for themselves in a very short time and then help you save on expenses.

If you have a house, you can be sure that things will go wrong from time to time, but if this happens, you shouldn’t panic: there are some repairs that you can do on your own, without having to spend too much money.

In case a tile happens to break, the first thing that you have to do is to remove the grout around it with the help of a grout saw that you can find for a couple of dollars at every hardware store. Remove the entire tile that has been affected in case it already started to chip.

If about half of the tile is still intact, make a hole in with a masonry drill that will break the tile and remove the pieces from the center outwards. Get the new tile and glue it with and adhesive. In the end all you have to do is to apply the new grout to the edges.

If you have vinyl in the house, after a time it might get torn. In this case you should apply some silicone-base seam sealer that fills the tear and wipe the excess off with the help of a piece of dry cloth. Another solution that you may try in case of it is a no-wax floor and if the tear is small, rub soap bar sideways until the soap fills the cut.

You could be thinking that the soap will go away when you wash the vinyl, but unless you emerge it in water and brush the soap off, it will stay in place. Naturally the vinyl won’t be as good as new, but this is a good temporary solution for your problem.

It is common to have wood cabinets in the kitchen, and it is very likely for them to get scratched. To take care of the problem you should be looking for scratch fillers that look like brown pencils or crayons. Naturally you should be going for the shade that is closest to the shade of your cabinet.

Once you got it, you just have to rub it into the scratch. There is also another similar product, that is just like a felt-tip pen and there are several different shades of ink.

Another problem that could occur is to have a frozen icemaker. If this happens, no matter how crazy this may sound, it can be taken care of with the help of a well-aimed hair drier.

There are all sorts of rooms in a house, and a lot of people think that they can only be used for the purpose they have been built. In case you feel the need of something, what do you do? You get it, right? So in case you need another room in the house, you will start looking around and find some space that isn’t used optimally.

In the end you might see that you have a garage that you could turn into something else, like a cozy room to spend some quality time there with your family.

For this little project you will have to redo the ceiling, add insulation and wallboard to the walls, add an insulated subfloor, and you should also throw in some custom add-ons like a beverage fridge and media equipment to help you enjoy the afternoons.

The under-counter fridge is a great idea, especially in case you are planning on using the room during parties. Even though you’re not really a big party fan, the family members could always need something to drink. This way you won’t have to run back to the house every time you need a glass of water.

In case you have a nice patio and maybe also a pool, you should think about divided-light pocket doors. These should be located on one side of the room, and you should also find some place for the cabinets holding some towels and other necessary items for having some fun at the pool.

This new room could become the media center of the house. In order to make sure that you will be able to enjoy every minute of watching TV, add a trio of TV screens that will make the room perfect for watching Super Bowl or for the kids to play Wii games.

So what do you have to do to achieve your dream room? It might be useful to add new doors and some custom cabinetry. Also consider keeping the garage style doors to make the space more functional. In case in the future you would like to use the space as garage again keeping the same door will make sure you have this possibility.

You also have the possibility to add a wall. This way you could separate the space and create a storage space that is accessible only from the outside. You will have all the room for storing sports equipment and other items.
