At some time or another, we all wish that we could have more interior space in our homes.

We dream of large, wide-open living rooms, kitchens with spacious marble islands, and bedrooms with sizeable walk-in closets.

We imagine greenhouses, libraries, and tall ceilings. We might not like the idea of living in a mansion in reality, but we can certainly fantasize about it from time to time.

It is easier to imagine having more space than to actually make that happen. After all, raising our ceilings and enlarging our living rooms would require tens of thousands of dollars in construction costs, if not an upgrade to a larger home altogether. These solutions are not feasible for the average person.

But there are still ways to make your living spaces feel bigger even if they aren’t any larger in reality. Doing so can help you feel less contained and constrained when spending time at home. It can create perceptions of freshness and openness that appeal to residents and visitors alike. So how can this be done? How can one make their interior space feel bigger? Here are a few tips:

Brighten your rooms

It’s well-established that brighter rooms generally tend to feel larger than darker ones. Brightness here refers both to decorative elements (i.e. the color of your walls and carpet) as well as natural ones (i.e. the amount of sunlight coming in from outside). Lightening these two elements can help you quickly grow a room’s perceived size.

Use reflective surfaces

On a similar note, reflective surfaces also have the effect of brightening a room and making it feel less cloistered. You’ve probably heard someone advise using mirrors to make small rooms feel large. The mirror approach is often a bit drastic and obvious, but you can get similar results (albeit more subtle ones) by incorporating a design scheme that maximizes glass, tiles, and light wood.

Change your furniture

Even though it takes up space, furniture is still an important contributor to a room’s sense of “largeness”. If you don’t believe this, take all the furniture out of your living room and then assess whether the room now feels larger or smaller – in most cases, it will probably be the latter.

This is not to say that you should put as much furniture in your living space as possible, but rather that you should find the optimal balance between too much and too little. Achieving this balance often involves creating clean sightlines and perhaps using custom pieces that fit seamlessly with the context. For example, if your kitchen feels too crowded and clunky, you might want to think about finding custom cabinets san diego that meld better with the surroundings.

Modernize your style

When the objects in a room feel big it is common for that room, by extension, to feel small. So if you have a massive, oversized couch that monopolizes your living room, that room will likely seem smaller than it truly is – even if it is largely enough to technically absorb the couch. So downsizing your style can help you upsize your room. For many people, an effective way of accomplishing this is by forgoing a traditional furnishing look for a sleeker, more modernist one.

These are just a few of the main ways to open up your interior space and make your rooms feel bigger. While we don’t always have control over the physical walls that exist in our environment, we usually have the power to change what lies between them – and to make the walls seem different as a result.

If a couple or professional have just bought their first property, it is required that a Home Insurance policy is taken out before they are handed their keys so they can move into their new home.

As paying a hefty repair bill when damage has been caused is not preferred by any homeowner, having Home Insurance reaps many dividends, especially as peace of mind will be provided at a price that isn’t very expensive.

Home Insurance covers a building, and not personal possessions. Choosing Home and Contents insurance will enable for the furniture which a person owns to be covered, you can get a home insurance quote online. With Home Insurance, it covers many eventualities which can be caused by a force of nature.

Not only is flood damage covered under Home Insurance but so too is storm and weather damage. Non-natural occurrences which can be claimed for under Home Insurance include fire and explosions, subsidence and structural failures as well as if a burst pipe occurs.

If several people live in the same property, such as shared accommodation, there is a greater chance of damage being caused. Therefore, it is vital that Home Insurance is bought, especially if significant damage could be caused and an extensive repair bill would need to be paid.

As Home Insurance can be even more affordable if several people contribute towards paying it, purchasing Home Insurance doesn’t have to leave a huge dent in a household’s budget.

Home Insurance provides not just financial peace of mind, but reassurance to the homeowner that they have selected a policy which will support them when damage is caused and it is not their fault. Helping to alleviate any stress when a house is damaged, purchasing home insurance demonstrates that a homeowner has invested their money wisely.

Anyone who has just bought a new home will likely start thinking about some changes they would like to make before they even sign all of the papers. Home improvement tips can be useful for new homeowners because not everyone knows all of the details when it comes to making some changes to a home.

There are certain things you need to realize about home improvement, and some of the changes that you may want to make simply will not be possible without the right knowledge.

You may think that home improvement tips are going to be hard to come by, but there are actually many different websites around the Internet that are made for this very reason. There are plenty of basic tips that you need to learn about before you move on to anything else because there are a few simple things that must be known by any homeowner. If you want to know how to improve your home then you need to be willing to do some work around the house.

The most important home improvement tip that you should try to remember is that you need to plan everything out before you make a final decision. This means that you need blueprints and financial calculations drawn up before you even think about spending a dime on a project. You also need to decide if you will be doing the work on your own or if someone else will be coming in to do the job for you.

Home improvement tips can save you time and money

Time and money are two of the most important things in the lives of many people, so it’s important to understand how time and money can be saved when you use various home improvement tips. Most people don’t take the time to learn the basic fundamentals of most of the things they do, and that creates a huge problem in the world of home improvement. If you are going to make some changes to your home then you need to have a plan and you need to know how you are going to get the job done.

Most first time home adjusters should try to hire and outside workforce to come in and get the job done because you probably won’t know what exactly to do during the entire project. Some people think it will be fun to do a job on their own, but they usually get bored with the entire project before it is even close to getting done. To make sure that the job gets done correctly, you should hire some professionals to make the alterations to your home.

Go for it if you think you can do it

If you think you know what you are doing with tools then you should definitely get started on projects on your own. There are a few people out there who already know all about the various home improvement tips, so anyone who knows about building houses could definitely get the job done with the help of a few friends.

A mild winter across much of the nation has left many people shocked that spring is, indeed, in the air. Even if you haven’t had any snow this winter or needed to bundle up against a biting wind, the calendar tells us that cold weather is in our review mirror and that springtime warmth is close at hand.

The approach of warm weather means different things for different people. For some, it is a time to start stocking up on the latest summer fashions. For others, it might offer an opportunity to clean the house, plan for a July vacation, or start scouting out tickets to a baseball game. And, for those of us who are constantly looking to design and redesign our homes, the approach of summer provides a great opportunity to change our interior dynamic – from one that feels cozy and warm in the winter to one that openly embraces the outside world once warm weather arrives.

Opening up your home for summer ultimately comes down to a matter of light. Usually, a home that lets in large amounts of light is one that can embrace summer more fully from a perspective of feel and design. Here, then, are a few tips for opening your home – and welcoming in the light – this spring season:

-Clear the windows. Heavy drapes may fit well with your interior décor, but many of them also serve to block some of the light coming into your home – even when they are open. Removing the drapes and replacing them with cellular blinds can help preserve appearances while also guaranteeing more light.

-Move outside. Getting greater use out of your front or backyard can have the effect of opening windows and doors, moving people fluidly between outside and inside, and bringing in larger amounts of light – both real and perceived. Adding porch space and desk chairs is always a great way to make this happen.

-Put on a new coat of paint. Lighter wall colors reflect light and give off the impression of brighter and airier rooms. If your home currently has dark interiors, especially in common spaces, a new paint job may be all you need to make the place more light-friendly this summer.

-Renovate and remodel. Of course, there are many larger-scale approaches that can bring a good deal more light into your home. For example, you can replace walls with glass, enlarge windows, add skylights, and knock down your attic to create taller rooms. All of these approaches are effective yet often expensive.

These are a few of the ways you can bring more light into your home this summer. While sitting indoors during the warm-weather months is usually no substitute for going outside, we can certainly still look to blend the two landscapes by making our homes lighter and brighter this summer.

When was the last time you bought an actual book made of paper? Chances are it’s been awhile. Printed books are set to go the way of the vinyl record: always in existence on a small scale to make a few remaining devotees happy, but mostly unseen and unsold.

This may seem like bad news for folks looking to design a home library to shelve their collections. But on the contrary, it gives such folks strong reasoning for preferring a more classic look. It makes sense from a style point-of-view as well as from a statement perspective.

Bold wall colors and dark wood are synonymous with the look of a classic home library. While various professional interior designers will argue over what makes Amish furniture unique for such a setup, the bottom line is that a classic home library must have a uniform wood selection and identical staining.

The common approach when designing a classic home library as far as the walls are concerned is to stick with a solid bold color such as forest green or maroon. However, one can inject a little bit of kick into the walls by opting for textured wallpaper that doesn’t vary far from a singular bold hue. Stripes of alternating shades are a good fit especially if they lead to crown moldings.

The look of a classic library is effective in a world where books are fading away for the following reason: books are not modern. A contemporary design wherein books are the central focal point derives from the former without doing much for the latter. This is especially the case considering the minimalism of today’s use of walls as storage space.

Dark wood shelving and furniture complete with bold paint or wallpaper is, however, detrimental to a home library experience without adequate lighting. Opt for natural sources for such a space – large windows facing either east or west – or even a skylight. Otherwise, focus on scattering light sources across the room in the form of floor and table lamps situated near chairs and desks.

If you’re looking to create a home library, then you need to accept the fact that books are quickly becoming an archaic form of data containment. Integrate their classic status into your design, which will invariably lead you to the classic home library look. Add in some subtle tweaks, and you’re sure to put together a reading room worth leaving your iPad for.

Bedstar offers a wide range of simple and multifunctional beds to help you save space in your bedroom and avoid feeling crowded. Many people select king-size beds for their bedroom to ensure having a restful sleep. However, these large beds are not the best option if you want more space.

How to save space and keep your king-size bed

The best way to have enough space with a large bed is to select a multifunctional one. The bed market develops in accordance to the needs of the clients. There are a few types of multifunctional beds available:

TV beds: Instead of buying separate TV furniture which means less space, your bed can incorporate a TV frame. This means less furniture and a way to spend less money.

Sofa beds: When they are not necessary, they can be folded.

Ottoman beds: These modern beds have a mattress lifting system incorporated to give you easy access to the storage space underneath

Make your bedroom seem larger

There are a few ways for your bedroom to seem larger than it actually is. Even if it does not actually give you more space, your bedroom will not appear crowded anymore.

Add mirrors to the closet door or buy a frosted glass door for a visual space enhancement.

You should also paint the ceiling in white; coloured ceiling makes the room seem smaller while white makes it look taller.

You should also paint the walls with a brighter colour or wallpaper which matches to the colour of the furniture. It will make the room seem bigger and less crowded.

A new paint job has the ability to bring a house to new life and this is something that you should consider in case you are thinking about doing something around the house.

If new color is what your heart desires, then you should know the latest trends regarding colors.

1. Blue

It is known that the White Blue is a big hit this year, but there are some other shades as well that you should take into consideration, such as Montpelier that is more of a grayish blue.

The good thing about this color is that it is timeless. Another kind of blue to think about is Amethyst Shadow that, as you may have thought, is a more purplish blue.

2. Grays

Although a lot of people would never consider painting their walls gray, you should know that there are some stars in this color category as well, such as Sharkskin, Stardust, Revere Pewter and Nimbus Gray. Make sure that you at least take them into consideration before making up your mind.

3. Neutrals

It’s not enough to have neutral colors this year, it is also important for them to have a soft hue. This is why some of the favorites include White Dove, Ballet White, Pashmina and Refined.

The big advantage of the colors is that they never go out of fashion and they match just any style.

4. Going bold

In case of the urban settings people are known to be a bit bolder when it comes to colors. This is why they are going for the more spicy tones such as Gypsy Love or Persimmon that are vivid and lively and fill people with the energy that they need to get through the day.

5. Earth tones

In 2012 the earth tones make a huge comeback. They have become so popular because they are colors that are timeless, and so people are thinking that they won’t need a new paint job soon, thus making some economies in a time of economic uncertainty. The tones of this kind that you may be thinking about include Farm Fresh, Masada, Fresh Olive and Dunmore Cream.

6. Metals

In case you would like your home to literally shine, make sure that you use some metal colors. It is more than trendy to have a bit of gold, bronze or silver in the home, and for sure you will find some matching accessories too to go with it.

When thinking about selling a house, a lot of people try to figure out the ways to add value to their home. This way they can get a better price and the new owners will be happier with the house. In some cases people would like to add value for their own comfort.

1. Adding space and light

Usually adding more light to the rooms makes a big difference. In case you have small and cramped rooms with little natural light, you may consider knocking some walls down and opening the floor plan. One of the things that you could do is to turn the kitchen, living room and dining room into one big open space.

2. Home office

More and more companies are trying to reduce their carbon footprint; so they have their employees working from home. Millions of people handle their work from their own home, and this is why it is a very good idea to add a home office to your house. This is something that has become a necessity.

3. The looks

In case your house doesn’t look good from the outside, it is possible that the potential buyers will never make it inside. In case the house didn’t get a paintjob for some time, this is the place to start. Make sure that the color you go for is suitable for the period of the house.

4. Sunroom

It is possible that you never heard about such thing before. The sunroom is considered to be a bridge between the home and the outdoors. It is common to have outdoor kitchens, patios and even fireplaces. These rooms could be heated or unheated.

5. Deck

If you have been considering a sunroom to add value then most probably you will think that adding a deck is a genial idea. It is said that more than 85% of the costs can be regained when you sell your house if you add a deck. Make sure that you make plans for a special deck.

6. Paint

This is one of the least expensive ways to make sure that your house looks its best. It’s not only the walls that we are referring to, but also furniture, doors, windows and the outside. This is the easiest way to bring an old house to new life and make it more appealing to people.

As you can see there is a lot that you could do for your house.

Although the ice dams may look pretty during the winter, you should also consider that they also represent danger to certain parts of the house. This is because they could make the water pour back in the house, peeling the paint down, sagging and staining ceilings, and so on.

How do they form?

In order to be able to prevent them, first you should know how these dams come to life. At the beginning the heat from the attic warms the roof but not the eaves. Because of the warmth the snow melts on the rooftop, but it freezes again at the eaves which are cold.

This is how the ice is formed at the eaves. There is more water coming from the melting snow, building up. The water could get under the shingles and go right back in your home.

How to Get Rid of them?

There are many options to get rid of them like:

1. Heated cables

One of the options you have in order to take care of the problem is to use heated cables. You should secure them to the edge of the roof in order to equalize the temperature inside and outside the roof. In case you would like to use this method, you should make sure to install the cables before the cold weather hits.

2. Fire with fire

Actually in this case you should fight cold with cold. All you have to do is to bring a box fan into the attic and place it where the water is leaking into your home. Because of the cold, the water will freeze, and so you can take care of the problem in a few minutes.

Remember that removing the dams with a chisel, hammer or shovel damages your rooftop. If you use salt, you do more harm than good because it damages the soil. So look for a safer solution.

3. Raking

This is an easy solution to make sure that you won’t have to face ice dams. Rake the snow off your rooftop while standing on the ground. Opt for a rake with wheels. This way you can instantly change the temperature of the roof without harming the shingles.

4. Deicing

You could decrease the damages done by the ice dams using pantyhose. Just fill the pantyhose that you don’t need anymore with ice melter. Place it on the roof in the middle of the dam so that it touches the gutter. You could use a garden rake to place the pantyhose in the right position.

Most people think about doing some DIY home improvement to give them something to do in their spare time but you have to realize that these kinds of projects usually take a lot of hard work. You get a lot of satisfaction at the end of the project when you see everything you’ve accomplished and how hard you worked, but the actually job of getting it done can take a good amount of time.

Sometimes a little home improvement cannot be ignored because your house is becoming to fall apart from the inside.

You have to keep your eyes and ears open when you are doing some DIY home improvement because you can get some good tips from the places you’d least expect. Plenty of people have dealt with doing their own home improvements in the past, so these are the people you will want to talk to when you need some help.

Most people will be willing to help a newcomer to the world of home improvement because they know all about the hard work that is involved with the entire process.

The first step in the home improvement process is always to plan everything out and see what you can afford to do with your home. The good thing is that most projects that you do on your own are going to be much cheaper than having someone else come out and do it.

You can expect to see an increase in the value of your home without have to spend that much money because you are willing to do all of the big time work on your own.

Where can you learn about DIY improvement?

The best place to look for help with your trials in the world of DIY home improvement is the Internet because that is where the hub of all the information you will need is going to be found. There are probably thousands, if not millions, of people who have already done the things you want to do to your home, so you should try to learn from these people as you go. There are plenty of forums online where you can learn the tricks of the trade and find out some special tips on how to lighten up your workload.

The best tip that someone is going to be able to give you is to make sure you plan everything out ahead of time so you don’t have to keep starting all over again. Most people want to just dive right into a project and not worry about the exact end product because they just want to get started on the work. While the work ethic is great for people who get started too early, they will find themselves doing a lot more work than they needed to if they don’t plan everything out in advance.

Take it one step at a time

The best way to get your DIY home improvement project done is to take it one step at a time and try to learn as much as you can as you go. There are plenty of tutorial videos about pretty much any kind of improvement you can make on your home available online, so just take the time to learn from these and work slowly.
